The Importance of Employee Background Checks

We’ve all heard these phrases multiple times: “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” and “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”

In the background screening world, one statement is so true and the other so false.

Hiring can be a daunting process. Going with you gut and hoping for the best, do not seem like best practices for filling that open position. Research shows that 53% of job applicants have false information on their resumes.

Make sure your new employee really is the right person for the job! Nowadays, employers have a variety of tools to assist them in choosing the best candidate for a job. One critical tool that most employers agree on is employment screening. When you establish a formal program that incorporates background checks, you accomplish several goals:

  • Screening programs help lead to a safer work environment for your customers and your co-workers, because you know who you are hiring.
  • Companies with quality screening programs tend to attract higher quality candidates.
  • Screening programs can lower the risk of negligent hiring lawsuits.
  • Screening programs help ensure that you hire and retain applicants with the proper skills to do the job.
  • Screening programs help reduce employee theft and shrinkage.

Do some background screening on your service provider as well. Choose a service provider that can walk you through the necessary steps of compliance when utilizing background screening reports for employment purposes. Make sure there is a complete understanding of terms like “FCRA,” “Adverse Action” and “Summary of Rights.” Finding a provider that is a member of NAPBS – the National Association of Professional Background Screeners – is also a benefit. The relationship between the provider and the client is key to a successful, safe and compliant screening program.
